The citation

What the jury recognised.

An exemplary restoration that preserves both the architecture and the working life it was built for.

Europa Nostra is the European Union's official voice on cultural heritage. Its annual awards recognise outstanding achievements in conservation, research, education and dedicated service. La Casería de Tomillos received its award in 2009 for the conservation category — the most exacting strand.

The recognition was given not for a building made beautiful, but for one kept honest: the 16th-century stone fabric restored to its original method, and the agricultural economy that the estate was originally built around still functioning inside its walls. Olive press, chapel, kitchens. Lived in, not staged.

Heritage that works

The chapel was consecrated in 1573. It has been used for three weddings this year.
